On Wednesday 20th May, St.Michael’s Academy represented the City of Wolverhampton at The Black Country Games Tag Rugby Competition. The team started off well with a 6-5 win against Walsall District. They followed that up with a convincing 6-1 win against Sandwell. This set up a nail-biting game against Dudley, as the only winning team in the group would go through to the final, who were also unbeaten. The game see-sawed in tries scored until a great run zig-zagging through the opposition by Jude put us level at 5-5. We then managed with some great defence ‘tagging’ to overturn the ball. Brodey swerved his way past several challenges to make it 6-5 when the final whistle blew…or so we thought!
The secondary school leaders (who had refereed the games very well all day) had the score at 5-5 and with the Dudley team manager accepting this score to be correct, they progressed to the final. Our Academy team- although a little confused and deflated by this – showed enormous sportsmanship and fair play by accepting the decision to play off for 3rd place. We won this game and were officially Bronze medal winners!
Mr McGinn could not have been prouder of the squad who attended the competition. A real credit to our Academy ethos. Well done Emily, Keeley, Carys, Ellie, Mikey, Jude, Jake, Brodey, Shay, Tom, Shaun and Tommy.
